A business, big or small, is always exposed to some kind of threat. Be it an inevitable natural disaster or an online attack, no business is ever spared from it. As a business owner, one of your major concerns is to ensure business goes on as usual in times of disasters.

One of the most recent online threats is “data kidnapping” or better known as ransomware. This is a serious online attack that compromises the security of all your critical data. According to Carbonite bizbuzz, ransomware attacks have increasingly grown to five hundred percent since 2013.

Cryptolocker is the first of this infamous ransomware. It appeared in the summer of 2013. It infects any computer or device by a simple click on a link attached to an email. In just a matter of seconds, files become unusable and locked. For the files to be retrieved, a ransom has to be paid.

According to this PCWorld article, about 1.3% of the half a million victims actually paid to get their files back. This earned Cryptolocker a whopping three million dollars in less than two years. Read also: Start protecting your business with an offer code from Carbonite

So even if there are ways to decrypt these ransomware, there will always be a stronger and more dangerous version.

It’s not enough to tell your employees to be cautious and vigilant with their email attachments. After all, ransomware can be downloaded from an email that has been sent by a co-worker.

So it’s hard to ignore such email because it actually shows up in your inbox. There’s a greater chance for you to click on the link since the email came from someone you know. Related read: Which Carbonite Business backup solution is right for your business?

  1. Ransomware, computer crashes, and disasters are just some of the reasons why we should back up our data. I really don’t understand why there are still some folks out there who don’t back up.

  2. I just read in my news feed that ransomware is going to attack the corporate world. Just this year alone, there will be about sixty-five thousand ransomware attacks. That is a lot! It could be your business or mine.

We don’t have any capacity to fight ransomware. We just have an anti-virus software installed in all the computers in the office. But then again, there’s no guarantee with that. But we do have Carbonite to back up our files and that gives me some peace of mind. We wouldn’t have to pay any ransom in case we’re attacked.

So, if you’re business isn’t backing up data, then you’re most likely to get in trouble.

  3. Well, it also pays to have a good antivirus to lessen the chances of ransomware. But you are right about backing up your files with Carbonite. It’s very secure and easy to use. You will never end up buying back your files. You can just restore them and continue working.

  4. Here’s a story I want to share with you. I’ve been loyal to Carbonite for years and I mean years! it was introduced to me by someone and I immediately signed up for it.

After using it for a few months, I was very happy with it. Naturally, I would tell my other friends about it. Gotta share the good things in life. 😊
Of course, there’s always that one person or in my case, two people who felt they didn’t need a service like Carbonite. As a matter of fact, one of them proudly boasted to me that he does the backing up himself. Unfortunately, he is one of the people I know who has experienced data loss. So much for his own effort to back up his files.

  5. Once files are stolen, they can easily be backed up by the hacker. So even if you do attempt to pay to get them all back, they’ve already been exposed. The point is, it’s not worth getting them back. Why bother? If all your files are backed up by a service like Carbonite, you don’t have to worry about getting back your files. Instead, you could just retrieve all your files from Carbonite so that you can immediately measure and monitor how much of your data have been exposed. That way, you can control the possible damages that could arise from the ransomware.

  6. Paying to get our files back will just encourage the proliferation of ransomware. Installing a reliable anti-virus software and having a reliable backup service helps to mitigate the risks associated with ransomware.
